King-Chavez Public Schools is organized as a single 501(c)(3) public benefit non-profit corporation. The non-profit corporation’s Board acts as the corporate governing body over separate corporate divisions or departments, one for each charter school.  We believe this organizational model best provides for close and cohesive relationships between its schools reducing the burdens on each school. Student learning can remain the primary goal and Principals can assume their roles as instructional leaders.  King/Chavez elected to have a single board governing all of its schools, with each school having a unique County District State (CDS) Code, treasury account, budget and test scores.  The California Department of Education describes this type of organization as a “Charter Network Operator”.

Relationship Between the Corporation and Individual Schools

King-Chavez Public Schools assumes the role of corporate governing body for each of its charter schools—providing policy direction, information, guidance, support, and technical expertise.  The non-profit undertakes and oversees central operation of school functions in order to allow the school principals, students and teachers to dedicate themselves to educational leadership free of administrative burdens.  The non-profit corporation is the employer of all schools’ staff, hires the CEO, shares the costs of the CEO and other departmental administration, constitutes the only corporate board and fiscal agent, holds title to real estate and debt, and out-sources other administrative needs.  The corporation ensures that the finances of each charter school are transparent and separately auditable, and that shared expenses are fairly allocated among the schools.

Governing Board

The Board’s primary responsibilities are 1) Fiduciary (Review & Approve Budgets, Plans, etc.); 2) Strategic Planning; 3) Legal Compliance; 4) Educational Program Review; (Mission, Accountability & Performance) and 5) Review Performance of CEO.

Corporate Home

The Corporate Home’s purpose is to provide a streamlined and simple administrative structure for all of the King-Chavez Schools.  We believe it is imperative that we do not recreate the district type centralized bureaucracy.  It is not our role to define and leverage people it is our role to serve and empower.  The role of the Corporate Home is to empower local Directors to focus on Instruction and Relationships Through providing:

  1. Administrative,  Human Resources and Back Office Accounting Support
  2. Regulatory Compliance - “Bureaucratic Buffer Zone” Maintaining positive relationships with the District Authorizer, County, State and Federal governments.
  3. Legal Representation
  4. Corporate Governance
  5. Organizational, Resource and Leadership Development
  6. Leveraging the Collective Voice of all King/Chavez Academies to promote and advance social justice through educational reform.
  7. Centralized Sharing of Appropriate Resources
